Welcome to my business webpage.  Let me tell you a little about myself.

I’ve been a therapist for my entire working life, that’s about 40 years.  Earlier in my career I worked in the public sector.  That was in Georgia and Massachusetts, mostly, but some in Florida, too.  I did vocational rehabilitation, psychological testing and spent plenty of  time with some very disturbed people in state and city hospitals.  That was where I got interested in family therapy.  I wanted to make the world a little safer and saner for kids to grow up and I came to believe the family was the center of the action.  So, I began to pursue training in family treatment.  Later, I was in charge of outreach and crisis intervention for the Berkshire Mental Health Center.  Again, families were front and center.

After I moved to Florida, I worked with a facility for juvenile delinquents in Key West.  I felt right at home in the Keys but there wasn’t enough clinical work for me there.

Dr. Hugh R. Leavell

I decided to pursue a doctoral degree in Marriage and Family Therapy at Florida State University, one of the oldest family therapy training progams in the country.  I got my Ph.D. there in 1988 and moved to Jupiter, where I’ve been practicing ever since.  I have developed a specialty in working with couples because that’s the best way to help children.  The best therapist for a child is always the parent.  I want to help couples make their relationships work better, for their own sake as well as the childrens’.  Also, for me, it’s intellectually satisfying to talk with people about their lives, their choices and their plans.  That’s why I do what I do.

Children learn what they live with, for better or worse.  If they observe healthy behavior from their parents they will learn to behave in healthy ways, just they way they learn language, without difficulty.  If they watch their parents loving each other properly, they will learn to do that, too.  This will make their own adult lives and the lives of their children much better later on.  This is my contribution to society.  I am a love doctor.  There are many out there doing love all wrong.  I teach people to do it right.  It makes all the difference in the world!

On this website you will find numerous articles I have written, mostly for the Palm Beach Post.  I was a weekly columnist in the Post every Friday for ten years between 1993 and 2003.  I was replaced by the “God Squad” column (remember the rabbi and the priest?) when the feature editor decided to go for a more religious slant in her section.  I wrote over 500 short articles, however, and many of them are available for you to read, if you wish, right on this website.  Just hit the “articles” button at the top of this page and you’ll see them listed.

I have a nice office, centrally located on western PGA Blvd.  You’re welcome to come there to see me.  However, if  you prefer, I also make house calls.  I will come to your location and do “kitchen table therapy”.  You don’t have to move a muscle.

I do love the way you have presented this concern and it does give me personally some fodder for thought. However, from what I have observed, I just simply wish when the actual opinions pile on that individuals keep on issue and in no way start upon a soap box involving some other news of the day. Anyway, thank you for this exceptional piece and though I do not agree with it in totality, I regard the viewpoint.

Of course you’re right about the focusing on an issue. Many couples make the mistake of trying to argue about too many issues at once which leads to confusion along with frustration over never being able to resolve anything.
